Meet Marius, Your Main Guide
Marius is born and raised in Brasov and a fan of both mountain biking and skiing.
He founded Massif Experience back in 2016 with a single goal in mind: to give tourists a more exciting way to discover the Carpathians, other than by car.
Needless to say, he knows the mountains around Brasov better than his own house.
Discover Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan, especially far east KZ, is an under-the-radar gem for backcountry tour skiing and cat skiing. It’s got rugged terrain, deep, fresh powder, and very low crowds (for now). It’s a niche favorite for people who want raw, unspoiled nature, and for those who want to run away from the highly crowded resorts in the Alps.
Itinerary: What's The Plan?
We want to pack as much fun and riding as possible! Here’s how it’ll go…
We’ll have our first few days of cat skiing. We’ll ride fresh powder in some beautiful, remote locations that very few people ever get to. We’ll have a vehicle that’ll transport all of us up in the mountain, and we’ll all ride down through the nicest pow ever.
Back to our specialty, tour skiing. We’ll also do a couple of days of ski touring with our splitboards. Let’s visit the backcountry of beautiful Kazakhstan together and shred some more powder.
We’ll take a 2-hour drive back to Oskemen and then a short flight to Almaty. We’ll get there just in time for a short night walk and an authentic Kazak dinner, maybe a part, some karaoke, or just a night of socializing and resting.
We’ll spend this day in Shymbulak, on piste and off-piste. There’s 3200m elevation so we can ride the entire day without getting bored. Shymbulak is one of the best ski resorts in Kazakhstan, and it’s so nice you could say you’re in the best resorts in Europe.

Frequently Asked Questions
How will cat skiing days go?
We’ll have 3 days of cat skiing with drops from 3500m to 4700m. We’ll do from 5 to 7 drops, depending on everyone’s level. The ratrac will only take 14-15 persons, but that’s more than enough.
During all cat skiing days, you’ll have a tail and a head guide so everyone is safe and sound.
What's in Shymbulak?
Shymbulak is the biggest resort in Kazakhstan, very similar to the ones you’ll find in the Alps.
Everything here is worthy of a Western European country, with a twist: the prices are lower and the place a lot less crowded. Trust me, Shymbulak will make you reconsider your favorite ski resort.
Do you also rent the equipment?
In most cases, yes, we can also rent the equipment needed for the tour. That being said, I’m sure you feel most confident on the trails with your equipment, so we recommend you bring your own.
However, if you don’t have what’s necessary, we’ll be more than happy to provide everything you need.
How will ski/split tour go?
We’ll have 2 days for ski/split touring, with a 3rd day being optional for 50 eur/pers. The drops are approximately 1000-1700m in and around forests. Beautiful scenery and a lot of effort, but it’ll pay off.
This tour will be ski in and ski out of your hotel, with the possibility of transfers if need be.
How are the hotels we'll stay in?
What's in Altay Mtns.?
The Altay Mountains spread across Kazakhstan, Mongolia, China, and Russia. We’ll be in Siberia, so the temperatures will most likely be below 0. During our last tour, the temperature got as low as -35 Celsius when we were boarding a plane in Oskemen. Generally, however, there will be between -10 and -15 Celsius.
We’ll ride in forest areas with slopes between 25 and 35 degrees.
