Backcountry tours in the Bucegi Mountains

Open Nav

I guess usually you really have to work for those remarkable once in a lifetime views. Somehow Glajeriei valley in the Bucegi Mountains is the ultimate cheat code. This is a short description of what your big mountain adventure could look like.

A two hour hike either boot packing or skinning up the mountain and we reach Malaiesti cabin (1720m), a real symbol for this part of the Carpathians. From this point on the entire Glajeriei valley opens up with its incredible size. We’re left with pretty much dozens of options for a ski/ split board backcountry mission.

Not to mention that this area has a very generous annual snowfall that means you can ride from the first weeks of winter up to June. There is a wide range of tour possibilities. Either a more extreme riding experience or a very chill and scenic hike and ride through these beautiful landscapes, depending on skill and fitness level.

  • fun fact > the first Malaiesti Cabin was built in 1882 and was the first cabin inside the Bucegi Mountain range
  • history lesson > due to fires, violent storms and avalanches the cabin was rebuilt no less than five times

TOUR OPTIONS

Glajeriei Valley Tour

From Malaiesti Cabin we continue skinning up through the spectacular glacial valley of Glajerie. Divided into three giant amphitheatre-like meadows it always makes a huge impression on our guests. The entire trail is surrounded by huge vertical cliffs, gnarly couloirs and the occasional mountain goat. It is an excellent tour option for beginner to intermediate riders who want to improve their skill level. Luckily, it is also ideal for someone who wants to try splitboarding/skiing in the backcountry for the first time.

  • Split geek sheet > skinning is when you cover terrain, uphill most of the time, with your skins attached to your skis.

We also offer splitboard & ski rental services

The ride up has a few trickier sections where you’ll either discover or simply improve your sidehilling technique but overall it is quite an accessible hike. However, the ride down can vary in degrees of difficulty depending on the group’s preferences. Either the classic and fairly easy line that follows the summer hiking trails or opting for some spicy detours.

  • Split geek sheet > side hilling is the practice of moving across a hill where one splitboard ski is higher than the other and the edges are used to maintain grip.

This tour is an all time favourite due to it’s incredible views from start to finish and is an excellent alternative when weather conditions look less than ideal. Even if the technical aspects are minimal on this tour and thus offers a great chance to explore the range with little experience we do require that our clients have a good fitness level.

  • good (medium) fitness level > regular physical activity and being comfortable with medium difficulty summer hikes of up to 8 hours,

Glajeriei Valley + Malaiesti Couloirs + Omu peak Tour

Same route, starting from Malaiesti cabin, all the way up through the valley but this time we continue and bootpack through one of the famous Malaiesti Couloirs. If weather and physical conditions permit we can even reach the range’s highest peak, Omu (2505m).

  • fun fact > the Malaiesti Couloirs are locally named “Hornuri” meaning chimneys due to their funnel-like shape.
  • split geek sheet > bootpacking is when we hike up the mountain in our boots with our skis/split attached to our backpacks

The way down is probably the most iconic Malaiesti line. Omu Peak – Hornul Mare (“The large Chimney”) or even opting for it’s more gnarly little brother Hornul Mic (“The Small Chimney”) – Glajeriei Valley – Malaiesti Cabin.

If snow is plentiful there can be an added bonus ride down from the cabin all the way to the car. This line is really up there when it comes to great big mountain riding. It also makes for a legit test of one’s boot packing skills, fitness level and riding abilities.

Backcountry touring will shed a whole new light on the world that lies in the mountains and not too mention…THE RIDE DOWN!
